One chart is a pure random walk; the other has a small, genuine upward drift — a real edge. Over this many steps that edge is buried in noise: even the optimal strategy (just pick whichever chart ends higher) tops out near 64%. Every wiggle in between is meaningless. This is descriptive — it shows the limit of reading a chart by eye, not what any chart will do next.

Your brain is a pattern-making machine

Show someone a chart of pure random noise and they will find trends, support levels, a double top, a "clean breakout" — even though every point was a coin flip. The reflex has a name: pareidolia, the same wiring that sees faces in clouds seeing signals in price. It is not a flaw you can switch off by concentrating harder, and it fires hardest exactly when there is nothing there.

Why the two charts look identical

Why this matters for reading a chart

If you cannot reliably see a small edge even when you have been told one is definitely there, you certainly cannot trust the patterns you "discover" on a live chart where you don't. That is the whole case for measurement: a backtest, a confidence interval, a signal statistic — numbers that hold up when your eyes would happily invent a story either way. This lab is descriptive: it shows the limits of visual pattern-reading, not what any chart will do next.
